AA Meetings are all pretty much the same, in format! They started very promptly and ended on time. In the beginning, the meeting starts with a couple of readings, like “How It Works” and/or “The AA Preable“. There might be a speaker who has been invited in to tell their story. Maybe there’s a reading from The Big Book from “24 Hours“. Then, the meeting is opened to “sharing”.
Once the prescribed hour is up, and everyone that wanted to share has shared, the leader of the meeting generally says, “Well, we have a nice way of closing”. Everyone stands in a circle and joins hands, and the speaker says, “Let’s have a moment of silence for those still sick and suffering, followed by the Serenity Prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. To break the silence and get everyone to start the prayer at the same time, with everyone calling out “God” the invocation in the first line of the prayer, the speaker might ask a question:
- Who brought us together this evening?
- Who kept us sober today?
- Who created fire ants and is the only one who knows why?
- Who delivers us like pizza?
- Who hangs the stars and keeps us out of bars?
