I’ve been sober for a couple of weeks, and I’m feeling pretty good. I’m also finding that I have a little extra money in my wallet! So, I thought I’d start a new hobby. I’d start buying all those vinyl LPs that I sold when I was in college so I’d have some drinking money. I got a new one in the mail yesterday, “Steely Dan: AJA”. I was so excited to see it again. I ran inside and ripped it open, dropped it on the turntable, and cranked it up. It played through “Black Cow” and “Peg”, but then 17 seconds into “Deacon Blues,” it starts skipping!

“expanding man”
“expanding man”
“expanding man”
“expanding man”
“expanding man”
Fuck! I go over and give the cabinet a bump, and the record plays out, and I could enjoy the rest of the album.
My drinking was like that! I’d get really excited to have a drink, and the first one or two would be great, but then I’d get into that old rut. Another one, and another one, and another one… I couldn’t stop it. I needed a bump!
What I needed was a meeting. Or a phone call. Stop the day and hear from another alcoholic to give me that bump to not drink and play that same groove over and over.
So, I’ll keep coming back and keep my head clear and remember not to drink today and wipe the dust off my records before I play them and enjoy my sober day playing to the end.
