On my way out the door to my nightly AA meeting, my wife mentioned that she misses me at night.  That was our special time together. Since I started going to AA meetings, I’d get up and leave the house for an hour and a half or two hours every night.  Between driving to the meeting for 20 minutes, the hour-long meeting, 15 or 20 minutes of fellowship afterward, and then another 20 minutes of driving home, I’m gone from the house for two hours every night.

One way to think about this time spent is that it’s our investment. We have money that we invest, and we take that money, which we could otherwise spend, and put it away in an investment scheme. We invest in stocks or bonds or municipal funds, and we hope that the money that we put away will be available to us in the future and will increase and grow.

I like to think of my time with AA as an investment. It takes a couple of hours every day or every night to go to a meeting, but I’m investing that time in my future. In the future, that time will be well spent. I’ll have a much better time with my wife because I’ll be sober.
